Order : Falconiformes
Family : Accipitridae
Scientific Name : Neophron percnopterus
64cm in size. Adult is quite distinctive looking - rather handsome in flight but somewhat scruffy when seen perched. Immature is dingy brown; the head-ruff is diagnostic on a perched bird while in overhead flight the diamond-shaped tail separates from all but the much larger, longer-tailed and longer-necked. More common in the plains and foothills, though some breed in the mountains. Generally scavenges on carrion and refuse in the vicinity of human habitation. Will drive off House Crows but gives way to most other vultures.
